Bend the Church, and Save the World

In the early 1900s, a twenty-six-year-old college student named Evan Roberts left college to return to his home in Lougher, Wales, to preach his first sermon. Seventeen people showed up to listen to the simple sermon that Evans Roberts delivered.

That same sermon would be given everywhere he went. It was simple, straightforward, and timeless. It became known as ‘The Four Points.’ Did God’s people desire an outpouring of His Spirit? Then four conditions must be observed:

  • Confess any known sin and put away any wrong done to others.
  • Put away all doubtful habits and forgive everyone.
  • Obey the Holy Spirit promptly.
  • Publicly confess Jesus Christ as your Savior.

No one could have predicted the impact that event would have.

We have come to know it as the Welsh Revival. “Bend the Church, and save the world!’ was the cry that rang out through villages and towns, in the churches, and in the hearts of men, women, children, and young people throughout all of Wales.

Within three months, 100,000 converts were added to the churches. Five years later, of the 100,000 added to the churches, 80,000 remained.

If God did such a mighty work in the 1900s, He surely can do it again in 2020 in our nation. But just as surely there are still conditions. Do we desire an outpouring of His Spirit enough to meet them? Do I?

Bend the Church, and save the world! Lord, won’t You please bend me!!!

Dream of 8/15/2013

I had a dream.

My friend and I were in the midst of a great tent revival/camp meeting. It looked to be much like the tent revivals of old but it was a modern tent with the old chairs. We stayed there for several nights and days. We had our belongings with us with in bags but we had unpacked them and kind of set up a little place around one of the poles that supported the tent to eat, and sleep and worship. It seemed a great time of worship and the Word and we were feeling very one with the Body and with the Lord.

Then in a flash my friend and I looked at each other and said what the Lord had spoken to each of us and that was, “It is time to leave…GOD said GO AND GO NOW!!!!” Instead of leaving immediately though we started to pack up our things. These weren’t all things of great value to the world but they were things we didn’t want to leave there. They were things like our Bibles, notebooks, pens, toothbrushes, hairbrushes, blankets, etc.

As we were packing a group of Umpah Loompahs (you know of the Willie Wonka movie) came in the tent and stood directly in front of each person that was still there and started singing and doing a dance that seemed to entice those in the crowd to join them. They weren’t doing anything but dancing a rather simple dance and singing a simple song but as each person looked on them they started joining in with them and as they joined you could feel “approval” (I use that as the only word I can think of to describe what it looked to be) was entering their lives.

My friend and I started throwing our things into our bags even faster and then a very clean cut good looking young man came into the tent and sat next to us with his own bags and he began looking around and watching what was going on. We finished our packing and turned for a minute to make sure we hadn’t let anything and the young man took what was in his bags and dumped it into our bags covering our belongings completely. His bags only contained dirt and sand.

Then I woke up.

IF you do this, THEN…

I found an interesting thing in reading the Word this morning. In Exodus 34 Moses asks God for favor and to be His inheritance (This caught my eye because part of Pastor Sammy’s teaching last night at Bible study was that we were His inheritance). He also asks for God to go with them and for the glory for all even though the people are wicked. Then God makes a promise to Moses but tells Moses to obey everything that He commands. The next three chapters are filled with tasks and I usually just run through them as unimportant but when I really looked at it every job had a purpose for preparing for a place for God in their lives and for what God was going to do. It involved men and women pulling together their abilities and resources…but only the men and women who had their hearts stirred…not everyone was onboard. In Exodus 40 toward the end (pasted below and highlighted) it says Moses finished the work assigned. The next verse starts with the word “then”….THEN (implies to me they the two passages are connected) THEN THE GLORY OF THE LORD FILLED THE TABERNACLE. Hallelujah! Does that stir anyone else? God made a promise. Conditions for the Israelites were few considering that promise.

God really spoke to me through these passages and so today I feel called to pray for our people, that all of their hearts are stirred. He spoke to me to pray for the workers behind the scenes that may be overlooked by many of us as even I overlooked the importance of the tasks in these passages. He spoke to me to pray for people to complete the tasks assigned as preparation and to take their assignments seriously.

This really struck me and something I don’t think of very often… Moses didn’t do all the work. He did his part and he heard from God and told all the people what God had commanded and then the work was completed by those that had their hearts stirred and wanted to be a part of what God was going to do. Moses called the people and the people used their God-given gifts and talents and anointing to carry it out. When they all (those with stirred hearts) had worked in unity and done their part to obey all the commands THEN THE GLORY OF THE LORD FILLED THE TABERNACLE.

This just excited me!!! Revival is probably many things. It speaks to me through these verses that living in the glory of God night and day, day in and day out definitely involves unity but not to get too hung up on those that are not onboard (YET) and it involves obedience in preparation based on God’s commands. While everyone may not be onboard because everyone’s hearts have not been stirred…it can still come for the benefit of all. Charles Finney said that, “A revival is nothing else than a new beginning of obedience to God.” Maybe he’s right. Maybe it starts with obedience or is revival to bring people to obedience. Maybe it is both. IF you do this, THEN…

Have more to say on this but some of it is still just stirring my soul, like an invention trying to bubble up or something, and I can’t get the word for it yet…if that makes sense.

Exodus 40:33-37

33 Then Moses set up the courtyard around the tabernacle and altar and put up the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard. And so Moses finished the work.

The Glory of the LORD
34 Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. 35 Moses could not enter the Tent of Meeting because the cloud had settled upon it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

36 In all the travels of the Israelites, whenever the cloud lifted from above the tabernacle, they would set out; 37 but if the cloud did not lift, they did not set out—until the day it lifted. 38 So the cloud of the LORD was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel during all their travels

God is Stirring

Prayer notes (12/1/2009) God has stirred my heart this week to some new places. To press in and push hard in this last month of 2009 for the breakthrough that was proclaimed by our pastor at the beginning. Is this not the will of God? I believe it is and therefore this breakthrough is also a PROMISE of GOD as He said in His Word “anything we ask according to His will.”

1 John 5:14-15 says: “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.”

and Haggai 1:13-14 says,
‘”I am with you,” declares the LORD. So the LORD stirred up the spirit of the whole remnant of the people. They came and began to work on the house of the LORD Almighty, their God,…’

So I’m asking tonight…

Lord! We love you. We declare our love for you! We pray tonight as a part of the body of Christ, along with You, Jesus! Stir us Lord! We want Your will, purposes and expectations fulfilled in us and through us; in this church and through this church. We pray with a living hope and confident expectation because we serve a Living God. We are going after Your honor and Your glory and are thankful for this opportunity as we humble ourselves in Your presence Lord.

We believe we will see a demonstration of the power of the resurrection manifested through our prayers tonight in a very real way– even this day. We declare NOW is Your time, Lord! Now is the time to build Your house. Now is the time for souls. We ask for souls Lord as Your Gospel is proclaimed this week by our man of God- through the Word; through song; through the Love of God flowing out of all of Your Body. Now is the time for Your Kingdom to advance and increase; for breakthrough. Now is the time for revival!
