Great Understanding

1 Samuel 1:1–2:21; John 5:1-23; Psalm 105:37-45; Proverbs 14:28-29

Great Understanding
He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly
. – Proverbs 14:29

Unto Hannah He Gave a Worthy Portion
But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the LORD had shut up her womb. And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb. And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.
 – 1 Samuel 1:5-7

I Am a Woman of a Sorrowful Spirit
And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD. Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.
 – 1 Samuel 1:15-16

She Bare a Son
Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.
– 1 Samuel 1:20

My Heart Rejoiceth
And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the LORD, mine horn is exalted in the LORD: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation. There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.
– 1 Samuel 2:1-2

Rise, Take Up Thy Bed, and Walk
When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? 7 The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. 8 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.
 – John 5:6-9

Sin No More, Lest a Worse Thing Come Unto Thee
Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.
 – John 5:14

The Son Can Do Nothing of Himself
Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: that all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
 – John 5:19-23

He Brought Forth His People with Joy
And he brought forth his people with joy, and his chosen with gladness: And gave them the lands of the heathen: and they inherited the labour of the people; That they might observe his statutes, and keep his laws. Praise ye the LORD
. – Psalm 105:43-45

Strong Confidence

Ruth 2:1–4:22; John 4:43-54; Psalm 105:16-36; Proverbs 14:26-27

Strong Confidence
In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.
– Proverbs 14:26

Thou Hast Comforted Me
Then she said, Let me find favour in thy sight, my lord; for that thou hast comforted me, and for that thou hast spoken friendly unto thine handmaid, though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens.
– Ruth 2:13

Sit Still
Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day.
– Ruth 3:18

There is a Son Born to Naomi
And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel. And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee, which is better to thee than seven sons, hath borne him. And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it. And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David.
– Ruth 4:14-17

The Second Miracle
So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death. Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe. The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die. Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way. And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth. Then inquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house. This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judaea into Galilee.
– John 4:46-54

Until the Time that His Word Came
Moreover he [the LORD] called for a famine upon the land: he brake the whole staff of bread. He sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant: Whose feet they hurt with fetters: he was laid in iron: Until the time that his word came: the word of the LORD tried him.
– Psalm 105:16-19

In Those Days…

There was No King
In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes. – Judges 21:25

They Wept Again
And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her. – Ruth 1:14

The Will of Him that Sent Me
Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. – John 4:34

Many Believed
And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did. So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days. And many more believed because of his own word; and said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world. – John 4:39-42

Touch Not Mine Anointed
Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm. – Psalm 105:15

A True Witness Delivereth
A true witness delivereth souls: but a deceitful witness speaketh lies. – Proverbs 14:25

My Meditation of Him Shall be Sweet

Judges 19:1–20:48; John 3:22–4:3; Psalm 104:24-35; Proverbs 14:22-24

My Meditation of Him Shall be Sweet
I will sing unto the LORD as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being. My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the LORD. Let the sinners be consumed out of the earth, and let the wicked be no more. Bless thou the LORD, O my soul. Praise ye the LORD.
 – Psalm 104:33-35

Children of Israel Went Up and Wept Before the Lord
(And the children of Israel went up and wept before the LORD until even, and asked counsel of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And the LORD said, Go up against him.)
– Judges 20:23

A Man Can Receive Nothing, Except it be Given Him from Heaven
John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven. Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled. He must increase, but I must decrease
. – John 3:27-30

He That Hath Received His Testimony
He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true. For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.
 – John 3:33-34

Devise Good!
Do they not err that devise evil? but mercy and truth shall be to them that devise good
. – Proverbs 14:22

Love Your Neighbor

Judges 17:1–18:31; John 3:1-21; Psalm 104:1-23; Proverbs 14:20-21

Love Your Neighbor
He that despiseth his neighbour sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he.
– Proverbs 14:21

The Place Where God Dwells
And the children of Dan set up the graven image: and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land. And they set them up Micah’s graven image, which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.
– Judges 18:30-31

The tribe of Dan completely forsook God. They stole the false god and the priest to come to be with them in the land they are about to steal. They believe God has given them this land into their hands when that is not the case at all. We read about the land God gave to the Danites for their possession back in the book of Joshua, but because of their lack of faith and their sinfulness, they weren’t able to drive the inhabitants out. Now in the land, they stole, they rebuilt their city, set up idols, and brought a false priest to worship in their land. All the while the place of true worship…the place where God was dwelling…was in Shiloh.

All of this fulfilled the second half of Israel’s ( Jacob’s) prophecy about the tribe of Dan.

Dan shall be a serpent by the way, An adder in the path, That bite the the horse heels, So that his rider shall fall backward.” – Genesis 49:17

He the Believeth
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
– John 3:16-21

He Causeth…
He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth; And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man’s heart.
– Psalm 104:14-15

So Great is His Mercy

So Great is His Mercy
For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. – Psalm 103:11-12

The Dead He Slew
And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead which he slew at his death were more than they which he slew in his life. Judges 16:30

He Knew and Knows All Men
But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, and needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man. – John 2:24-25

He That is Soon Angry
He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated. – Proverbs 14:17

Hear My Prayer, O Lord
Hear my prayer, O LORD, and let my cry come unto thee. Hide not thy face from me in the day when I am in trouble; incline thine ear unto me: in the day when I call answer me speedily. – Psalm 102:1-2

We Have Seen God
And Manoah said unto his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God. But his wife said unto him, If the LORD were pleased to kill us, he would not have received a burnt offering and a meat offering at our hands, neither would he have shewed us all these things, nor would as at this time have told us such things as these. And the woman bare a son, and called his name Samson: and the child grew, and the LORD blessed him. – Judges 13:22-24

John Bare Record
And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God. -John 1:32-34

A Wise Man Feareth
A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident. – Proverbs 14:16

I Will Set No Wicked Thing Before Mine Eyes
I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; It shall not cleave to me. –
Psalm 101:3

Didn’t You Hate Me?
And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father’s house? And why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress? And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou majesty go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.
– Judges 11:7-8

In Him Was Life
In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. –
John 1:4-5

The Backslider
The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: And a good man shall be satisfied from himself. –

Then Opened He Their Understanding

Judges 9:22–10:18; Luke 24:13-53; Psalm 100:1-5; Proverbs 14:11-12

Then Opened He Their Understanding
Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, and said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
 – Luke 24:45-47

His Soul was Grieved for the Misery of Israel
And the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Did not I deliver you from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines? The Zidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites, did oppress you; and ye cried to me, and I delivered you out of their hand. Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more. Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation. And the children of Israel said unto the LORD, We have sinned: do thou unto us whatsoever seemeth good unto thee; deliver us only, we pray thee, this day. And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the LORD: and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.
 – Judges 10:11-16

Serve the Lord with Gladness
Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.
 – Psalm 100:1-5

There is a Way Which Seemeth Right
There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death
. – Proverbs 14:12

And They Remembered His Words

Judges 8:18–9:21; Luke 23:44–24:12; Psalm 99:1-9; Proverbs 14:9-10

He Gave Up the Ghost
And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost
. – Luke 23:46

And They Remembered His Words
Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. And they remembered his words, – Luke 24:5-8

Gideon Died and the Children of Israel Turned From God
And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baal-berith their god. And the children of Israel remembered not the LORD their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side: neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, namely, Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.
– Judges 8:33-35

Choose Your Leaders Wisely
And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother’s brethren, and communed with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother’s father, saying, Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether is better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal, which are threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I am your bone and your flesh. And his mother’s brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He is our brother. And they gave him threescore and ten pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-berith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light persons, which followed him. And he went unto his father’s house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal, being threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself. And all the men of Shechem gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and went, and made Abimelech king, by the plain of the pillar that was in Shechem.
– Judges 9:1-6

Worship At His Footstool
Exalt ye the LORD our God, and worship at his footstool; for he is holy. Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the LORD, and he answered them. He spake unto them in the cloudy pillar: they kept his testimonies, and the ordinance that he gave them. Thou answeredst them, O LORD our God: thou wast a God that forgavest them, though thou tookest vengeance of their inventions. Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy
. – Psalm 99:5-9

The Heart Knoweth
The heart knoweth his own bitterness; and a stranger doth not intermeddle with his joy.
– Proverbs 14:10
