The Glory of the LORD Shall Appear Unto You

Leviticus 9:6

Day 32 – A Year in the Bible – Leviticus 8-10

______

LEVITICUS 8 – MOSES CONSECRATES AARON AND HIS SONS

Anointing
And Moses took the anointing oil, and anointed the tabernacle and all that was therein, and sanctified them. And he sprinkled thereof upon the altar seven times, and anointed the altar and all his vessels, both the laver and his foot, to sanctify them. And he poured of the anointing oil upon Aaron’s head, and anointed him, to sanctify him. – Leviticus 8:10-12

Consecration
And ye shall not go out of the door of the tabernacle of the congregation in seven days, until the days of your consecration be at an end: for seven days shall he consecrate you. As he hath done this day, so the LORD hath commanded to do, to make an atonement for you. Therefore shall ye abide at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation day and night seven days, and keep the charge of the LORD, that ye die not: for so I am commanded. So Aaron and his sons did all things which the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses. – Leviticus 8:33-36

Aaron and his sons were consecrated and anointed publicly–before all Israel–so that all would know they were chosen ministers.

LEVITICUS 9 – THE EIGHTH DAY

And it came to pass on the eighth day, that Moses called Aaron and his sons, and the elders of Israel; – Leviticus 9:1

Four Commands — the First Ministry of Priests
1. Take a young calf for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering, both without blemish, and offer them before God for Aaron and his sons (9:1-2)

2. Speak to Israel to take a kid for a sin offering; a calf and lamb (both of the first year, w/o blemish) for a burnt offering; a bullock and a ram for peace offerings; and a meat offering mingled with oil, and offer them before God for themselves (9:3-4)

3. To Aaron: go to brazen altar and offer your sin offering, and your burnt offering, and make atonement for yourself (9:7)

4. Offer the people’s offering and make atonement for them
(Dake Bible notes)

All the Congregation Drew Near
And they brought that which Moses commanded before the tabernacle of the congregation: and all the congregation drew near and stood before the LORD. – Leviticus 9:5

The Glory of the LORD Shall Appear Unto You
And Moses said, This is the thing which the LORD commanded that ye should do: and the glory of the LORD shall appear unto you. – Leviticus 9:6

Glory of God
And Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of the congregation, and came out, and blessed the people: and the glory of the Lord appeared unto all the people. And there came a fire out from before the Lord, and consumed upon the altar the burnt offering and the fat: which when all the people saw, they shouted, and fell on their faces
. – Leviticus 9:23-24

When the Glory of the Lord appears, you will fall on your face before Him.

LEVITICUS 10 – I WILL BE SANCTIFIED IN THEM THAT COME NIGH ME

Strange Fire
And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the Lord, which he commanded them not. And there went out fire from the Lord, and devoured them, and they died before the Lord. Then Moses said unto Aaron, This is it that the Lord spake, saying, I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me, and before all the people I will be glorified. And Aaron held his peace.
 – Leviticus 10:1-3

Five Sins of Nadab and Abihu
1. They did what was not commanded in ministry.
2. They offered “strange fire” (of their own making, not the fire of the altar) before God (10:1)
3. They offered incense at the wrong time and place.
4. They failed to sanctify themselves before God and the congregation who were in a state of religious ecstacy (10:3; 9:24)
5. They got drunk and tried to carry on holy services in this condition (10:3,9)
(Dake Bible notes)

These men died because they did something they were not instructed to do. It was disobedience. What is strange fire? A fire offered in your own way or for your own purposes. It is something offered in disobedience. God’s instructions are to be followed exactly.

Drinking
Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations: And that ye may put difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean; And that ye may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the Lord hath spoken unto them by the hand of Moses. – Leviticus 10:9-11

Here are good reasons not to drink – that you can distinguish in you life and before the people between what is holy and what is unholy; what is clean and what is unclean. And that you can teach the Lord’s laws to others.

If I Had Eaten the Offering, Should It Have Been Accepted?
And Moses diligently sought the goat of the sin offering, and, behold, it was burnt: and he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, the sons of Aaron which were left alive, saying, Wherefore have ye not eaten the sin offering in the holy place, seeing it is most holy, and God hath given it you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the LORD? Behold, the blood of it was not brought in within the holy place: ye should indeed have eaten it in the holy place, as I commanded. And Aaron said unto Moses, Behold, this day have they offered their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD; and such things have befallen me: and if I had eaten the sin offering to day, should it have been accepted in the sight of the LORD? And when Moses heard that, he was content. – Leviticus 10:16-20

Moses was angry when he found that the portion of the people’s sin offering that the priests should have eaten had been burnt instead. Aaron replied that because of the terrible happenings that day, his two younger sons thought it would be more acceptable to God for them to burn their portion in sorrow than to eat it in joy. Moses was satisfied with Aaron’s answer.
