And Jesus Seeing Their Faith…
And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city. And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. – Matthew 9:1-2

Wherefore Think Ye Evil in Your Hearts?And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. Jesus Saw a Man Named Matthew
And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him. – Matthew 9:9

Why Eateth Your Master with Publicans and Sinners?
And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples. And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. – Matthew 9:10-13

Why Do We and the Pharisees Fast Oft, But Thy Disciples Fast Not?
Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not? And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast – Matthew 9:14-15.

No Man Putteth a Piece of New Cloth Unto an Old Garment
No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved. – Matthew 9:16-17

Rehobeth – For Now the LORD Hath Made Room for Us
And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there. And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them. And Isaac’s servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water. And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac’s herdmen, saying, The water is our’s: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him. And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah. And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land. – Genesis 26:17-22

My Son, Obey My Voice
And Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son, saying, Behold, I heard thy father speak unto Esau thy brother, saying, Bring me venison, and make me savoury meat, that I may eat, and bless thee before the LORD before my death. Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that which I command thee. Go now to the flock, and fetch me from thence two good kids of the goats; and I will make them savoury meat for thy father, such as he loveth: and thou shalt bring it to thy father, that he may eat, and that he may bless thee before his death. And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man: my father peradventure will feel me, and I shall seem to him as a deceiver; and I shall bring a curse upon me, and not a blessing.

Upon Me Be Thy Curse, My Son
And his mother said unto him, Upon me be thy curse, my son: only obey my voice, and go fetch me them. And he went, and fetched, and brought them to his mother: and his mother made savoury meat, such as his father loved. And Rebekah took goodly raiment of her eldest son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them upon Jacob her younger son: and she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands, and upon the smooth of his neck: – Genesis 27:6-16

The Voice is Jacob’s Voice, but the Hands are the Hands of Esau
And he came unto his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I; who art thou, my son? And Jacob said unto his father, I am Esau thy firstborn; I have done according as thou badest me: arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my venison, that thy soul may bless me. And Isaac said unto his son, How is it that thou hast found it so quickly, my son? And he said, Because the LORD thy God brought it to me. And Isaac said unto Jacob, Come near, I pray thee, that I may feel thee, my son, whether thou be my very son Esau or not. And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father; and he felt him, and said, The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau. And he discerned him not, because his hands were hairy, as his brother Esau’s hands: so he blessed him. And he said, Art thou my very son Esau? And he said, I am. And he said, Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son’s venison, that my soul may bless thee. And he brought it near to him, and he did eat: and he brought him wine, and he drank. And his father Isaac said unto him, Come near now, and kiss me, my son. and she gave the savoury meat and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob. – Genesis 27:17-26

The Blessing
And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son Is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed: Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, And the fatness of the earth, And plenty of corn and wine: Let people serve thee, And nations bow down to thee: Be Lord over thy brethren, And let thy mother’s sons bow down to thee: Cursed be every one that curseth thee, And blessed be he that blesseth thee. – Genesis 27:27-29

Esau Cried with a Great and Exceeding Bitter Cry
And Isaac trembled very exceedingly, and said, Who? where is he that hath taken venison, and brought it me, and I have eaten of all before thou camest, and have blessed him? yea, and he shall be blessed. And when Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry, and said unto his father, Bless me, even me also, O my father. And he said, Thy brother came with subtilty, and hath taken away thy blessing. And he said, Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me? And Isaac answered and said unto Esau, Behold, I have made him thy Lord, and all his brethren have I given to him for servants; and with corn and wine have I sustained him: and what shall I do now unto thee, my son? And Esau said unto his father, Hast thou but one blessing, my father? bless me, even me also, O my father. And Esau lifted up his voice, and wept. – Genesis 27:33-38

By the Sword Shalt Thou Live, and Shalt Serve Thy Brother
And Isaac his father answered and said unto him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, And of the dew of heaven from above; And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother; And it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion, That thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck. – Genesis 27:39-40

And Esau Hated Jacob
And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob. And these words of Esau her elder son were told to Rebekah: and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said unto him, Behold, thy brother Esau, as touching thee, doth comfort himself, purposing to kill thee. Now therefore, my son, obey my voice; and arise, flee thou to Laban my brother to Haran; and tarry with him a few days, until thy brother’s fury turn away; until thy brother’s anger turn away from thee, and he forget that which thou hast done to him: then I will send, and fetch thee from thence: why should I be deprived also of you both in one day? – Genesis 27:41-45

Lord, Thou Hast Heard the. Desire of the Humble
The LORD is King for ever and ever: The heathen are perished out of his land. LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: Thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear: To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, That the man of the earth may no more oppress. – Psalm 10:16-18

So Shall Thy Barns Be Filled with Plenty
Honour the LORD with thy substance, And with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, And thy presses shall burst out with new wine. – Proverbs 3:9-10

The Doctrine of Tithing

Tithing Before the Law of Moses:
– It was practiced 430 years before the law (Gen. 14:20; 28:22; Heb. 7:1-11).

Tithing under the Law of Moses:
– He commanded (Lev. 27:30; Mal. 3:10) 

Five Purposes:
– For Levites (Num. 18:21-24) 
– Tithes of tithes for priests (Num. 18:26; Neh. 10:37; 12:44) 
– Tithes of tithes every three years for the poor and the ministers (Dt. 14:27-29; 26:12-14) 
– To supply God’s house (Mal. 3:10) 
– To honor God (Prov. 3:9-10)

When brought:
– Yearly, along with all other offerings for the feast (Dt. 12:6-7; 14:22-26)
– Belonged to God, not the people who paid them (Lev. 27:30-34 Mal. 3:8)
– Where brought (2Chr. 31:12; Neh. 10:38; 12:44; 13:5,12; Mal. 3:8) 
– If borrowed: 20% interest had to be added when paid (Lev. 27:31)
– If exchanged: both it and the exchange must be paid (Lev. 27:33)

Tithing In the New Testament:

Christ Taught It
(Mt. 23:23; Lk. 11:42; cp. Mt. 5:20 with Lk. 18:11-12 see Mt. 10:10; Lk. 10:7-8). 
– This was teaching for the kingdom of heaven (Mt. 11:11-14 Lk. 16:16)

Paul Taught It:
– Condemned sacrilege (Rom. 2:22), or robbing temples (Mal. 3:8-10) and using holy things (Lev. 27) 
– Teachers to be paid (Gal. 6:6) 
– God ordained support of ministers (1Cor. 9:7-14 1Tim. 6:17-18)
– Christians to give as God prospers them (1Cor. 16:2) 
– Melchisedec priesthood is eternal and must be supported by children of Abraham (Heb. 6:20; 7:1-11,17,21) 
– Children of Abraham in faith must walk in his steps (Rom. 4:12; Heb. 7) 
– Tithing is proof of obedience and appreciation of God’s blessings (Rom. 4:12; Heb. 7:6-10 1Cor. 9:7-14 1Tim. 6:17-18 cp. Mal. 3:8-10 Prov. 3:9-10 Gen. 14:20; Dt. 8:10-20)

Dake’s other notes on tithing:
No scripture even mentions a substitute program for tithing in the New Testament.

Since Christ sanctioned tithing it should be practiced. His teachings were not to confirm the law for a few days and then be abolished. They were to take the place of the law which was “until John.” Since then the kingdom of heaven is preached (Mt. 11:11-13 Lk. 16:16). 

If we do away with this doctrine of tithing, sanctioned by Christ, just because it was part of the law, then on the same basis we can do away with more of His teachings which were part of the old covenant. 

The only parts of the law we have a right to reject as part of the New Testament are those that are not found in the New Testament or are not made a part of it

Isaac was Comforted After His Mother’s Death
And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, and, behold, the camels were coming. And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel. For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a vail, and covered herself. And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done. And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah’s tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her: and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death. – Genesis 24:63-67

And His (Abraham’s) Sons Isaac and Ishmael Buried Him

Isaac Intreated the LORD for His Wife Because She Was Barren

And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the LORD. And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, And two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; And the one people shall be stronger than the other people; And the elder shall serve the younger. – Genesis 25:21-23

Behold There Were Twins
And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb. And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau. Because Abraham Obeyed

Follow Me and Let the Dead Bury Their Dead

The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made: In the net which they hid is their own foot taken. The LORD is known by the judgment which he executeth: The wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah. The wicked shall be turned into hell, And all the nations that forget God. Before All that Went in at the Gate of His City
And the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field, and the cave which was therein, and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all the borders round about, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth, before all that went in at the gate of his city. And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan. And the field, and the cave that is therein, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a buryingplace by the sons of Heth. – Genesis 23:17-20

I was drawn to this passage because it spoke of all that happened at the Gate of Abraham’s City and it reminded me of all I learned about the Gate during the year I did a sermon series on the book of Ruth. The gate of a city was very important. It was the place were buying and selling happened, where business deals were finalized. It was the place where marriages were arranged, disputes were settled and where legal decisions were made in the presence of witnesses. Kings used the gates to address the people and Prophets cried out to the people. It was a gathering place. 

Go to My Country, My Kindred, and Take a Wife Unto My Son
And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things. And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh: and I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell: but thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac. And the servant said unto him, Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest? And Abraham said unto him, Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again. The LORD God of heaven, which took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence. And if the woman will not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath: only bring not my son thither again. And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and sware to him concerning that matter. – Genesis 24:1-9

Abraham’s Servant Prayed
And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed; for all the goods of his master were in his hand: and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, unto the city of Nahor. And he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water. And he said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham. Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water: and let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master. – Genesis 24:10-14

Before He Had Done Speaking Rebekah Came Out
And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder. And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up. And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher. And she said, Drink, my Lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink. And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking. And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels. And the man wondering at her held his peace, to wit whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not. – Genesis 24:15-21

Whose Daughter Art Thou?
And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden earring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold; and said, Whose daughter art thou? tell me, I pray thee: is there room in thy father’s house for us to lodge in? And she said unto him, I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, which she bare unto Nahor. Jesus Was Willing

Jesus Spoke the Word

The LORD Did Unto Sarah as He Had Spoken, For Sarah Conceived

God Will Provide Himself a Lamb
